Rescuing Others from an Ice floe

  • When you notice someone on an ice floe, call the Emergency Service by dialing 112.
  • Try to establish contact with the person and let him know that help is on the way. The victim needs to stay in place, as movements may cause the ice floe to break.
  • If the ice floe is close enough, try throwing a tree branch, pole, or, if available, a rope, towards the victim.
  • If the victim manages to get ahold of the object, pull him carefully towards the shore.
  • Do not try swimming to the ice floe – cold water cools down your body quickly, and you risk drowning and hypothermia.
